Strategy for marine natural resources announced

  Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha addresses the launching Ceremony        The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment launched a ceremony to announce its Strategy for Sustainable Exploitation and Utilization of Marine Natural Resources and Environment Protection until 2020 and vision toward 2030 on April 2,2014 in Hanoi.      The overall targets of the Strategy are to know more thoroughly about potentials, advantages and negative impacts from the sea, boost the sustainable exploitation and use of marine resources and preserve the quality of sea water and the marine ecosystem for the country’s sustainable development.      According to Director of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Van Tai, to achieve these targets, the natural resources and environment sector needs to step by step meet basic requirements on marine technical infrastructures, provide forecasts on natural disasters and climate change on time to serve coastal socioeconomic development and islands. It will also have to mitigate deterioration and exhaustion of natural resources, curb the growing pollution of coastal environment, improve adaptability to climate change, preserve the ecological functions and biological productivity of the marine ecosystem to protect the sea bio-diversity and other sources from the sea; use natural resources sustainably and protect the sea environment.      Therefore, strategic orientations that the natural resources and environment sector needs to focus on until 2020 and vision toward 2030 are: conducting research one step ahead, especially on outpost islands; improve forecast and warning capability over natural disasters and impacts of climate change on sea areas; exploit and utilize suitably sea space; control resources causing marine pollution; preserve the sea bio-diversity and increase resistance of marine ecosystems under the impacts of climate change.      Addressing the Ceremony, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said the Strategy on the exploitation and use of marine resources and the protection of the marine environment until 2020 with vision until 2030 approved by the Prime Minister is an important premise for Vietnam to take suitable next steps to exploit efficiently and sustainably the marine resources. However, Mr. Tran Hong Ha also called on ministries, sectors and international organizations to contribute their opinions to figure out specific solutions and actions to fulfill the target set by the strategy, helping Vietnam soon become a strong marine country that enrich itself thanks to the sea but still keeps a healthy sea environment with low gas emissions and low-pollution sectors. .
